The aim of this paper is to overview the Central Bank of Brazil’s performance in relation to financial institutions in turmoil, mainly through the special regimes applicable to such entities and to
demonstrate the contribution of the Central Bank of Brazil to the viability of the financial market and to the protection of society as an user of services of financial institutions. For this purpose, the paper presents the basic concepts of the legal discipline of financial activity and the contours of the regulations issued by the Central Bank of Brazil with regards to such activity. Then, the main aspects of the financial institution in crisis are examined, in order to analyze preventive and corrective strategies to combat the crisis, focusing on the special regimes applicable to financial institutions.
